Five-Time PASS Champion
Enjoys Perfect Day at Oxford |
Ian Pettigrew,
Speed51 Contributor |
As a five-time
champion of the series, it’s
safe to say D.J. Shaw has
figured out everything he
needs to know about the Pro
All Stars Series.
Everything, that is, except
for the home of PASS – the
Oxford Plains Speedway.
Despite all his success,
Shaw had struggled on the
3/8-mile oval. But on a
boiling hot Sunday
afternoon, Shaw blistered
the field to score his third
PASS Super Late Model win on
the Maine bullring.
“This is special, this is
huge for me and our business
and our cars,” Shaw said
after the race. “We were so
bad at Lee with this car,
and just didn’t give up hope
on it. Brought it back the
same way here, made a few
tweaks, and led every lap.
That’s awesome, I can’t even
believe it.
“We were
just trying to be organized,
and execute, and everything
just went right into plan,
like what a perfect day. […]
We weren’t coming to win, we
were coming to learn, and
this is way better than just
learning.”
PASS
veteran Curtis Gerry had a
strong car all day, but lost
the handle on his machine in
the very last stages of the
race, costing what he
believed might have been a
potential shot at the win.
“It was getting loose at
the end, [I was] just
fighting loose,” Gerry said.
“I thought I might be able
to get D.J. on the outside,
that was my one Hail Mary
attempt, but it just was too
free, so we had to tuck in
and take what we got.”
Vermont native Nick
Sweet was one of the only
drivers to get the elusive
third groove working for
him, and he rode the outside
line all the way to a strong
third place finish. Had it
not been for a handful of
cautions earlier in the
race, Sweet might have found
himself in better contention
at the end.
“We
definitely needed a
caution,” Sweet said. “Our
car was better on the long
run than the two leaders in
front us, we were faster,
just no track position.
Probably a little bit of my
fault at the beginning,
tiptoeing around. We had
some cautions we had to
dodge, and just didn’t get
the track position we needed
early. Still, all in all a
really good day, I’m really
pleased with it, and next
time I hope we can come back
and get two spots better.”
Roland Robinson and Kyle
Desouza both had very solid
runs as well, finishing
fourth and fifth
respectively. Johnny Clark,
Trevor Sanborn, Jake
Johnson, Scott McDaniel, and
Ryan Robbins rounded out the
top ten.
Sunday also
saw several Oxford favorites
falter over the course of
the afternoon. Dave
Farrington, Jr., who has
been riding an incredible
streak of victories at
Oxford Plains, went a lap
down just past the halfway
point before retiring his
car on Lap 118. Travis
Benjamin retired his car
just six laps later, on Lap
124. Ben Rowe, after
suffering through troubles
in his heat race, only made
it to Lap 100 before he was
forced to retire his car.
Joey Doiron, who already has
a win at Lee USA this
season, did not make the
50-lap mark, pulling his car
in at Lap 47.
The
next round for the Pro All
Stars Series Super Late
Models is Sunday, June 20,
at the Hudson International
Speedway in Hudson, New
Hampshire. Fans will be able
to watch the entire feature
live on
Speed51.TV. |
