SUPER LATE
MODELS - NICK SWEET #40
PHOTOS BY NORM MARX |
How Sweet It Is
at
White Mountain
Motorsports Park |
N. Woodstock, NH
- Nick Sweet used lapped
traffic to power his way
past Travis Benjamin on lap
112 of the Pro All Stars
Series (PASS) 150 at White
Mountain Motorsports Park
(WMMP) Sunday afternoon. The
win is the fourth career
triumph for the Barre,
Vermont driver who has been
a regular on the PASS tour
mid-way through the 2018
season. Center Conway NH
driver DJ Shaw came home in
the second spot in the
throwback numbered 122 while
Benjamin held on for the
third place trophy.
Sunday's race was held
without fans for the first
time. However the action was
streamed by NSNsports out of
Vermont.
www.NSNsports.net
Sweet
started the 150 lap contest
on the outside pole, and
even led briefly on laps
20-22 before settling into
the second spot waiting for
the right time to make a
move. That time came as the
field approached the 100 lap
mark and the 40VT began his
charge to the front. Once in
the lead, Sweet stretched
his advantage to nearly a
straight at times as he
remained in full command of
the race. Shaw staged a late
race charge and moved to
with 6 car lengths but ran
out of time and settled for
the runner-up spot. Derek
Ramstrom and Alan Tardif
rounded out the top 5 while
Trevor Sanborn, early leader
Johnny Clark, Mike Hopkins,
Wayne Helliwell, and Garrett
Hall finalized the Top 10.
Tyler King served notice
to fellow PASS MODS
competitors that the neon
yellow number 11 will be a
force to be reckoned with in
2020. After joining the
series in 2019 after race
six, the Gray, Maine driver
led the series with three
wins in his 12 starts,
making him one of the
off-season favorites for the
title. King took over the
lead on lap five of and
survived a half dozen plus
cautions to nail down his
fourth career PASS MODS win.
Justin Larson, who wasn't
even sure he would be ready
to race as late as Tuesday,
came home second in a heated
battle with third place
finisher Brian Treadwell.
Treadwell, who has only
competed with PASS a handful
of times, was the pole
sitter and jumped out to the
early lead before slipping
back in the pack. Rounding
out the top 5 was Bobby
Nadeau and Gary Dwinal
making his debut with the
series. Sixth through tenth
went to Kevin Durgin, Joe
Day, Ashley Beyea, Ben
Tinker, and Spencer Vaughan.
A healthy field of 18 MODS
ran the feature.
The
eagerly awaited 2020 debut
of the Honey Badger Street
Stock Series became a test
of not just speed but of
survival. Making their first
start on the new 10 inch
tire meant that every
competitor had to start with
a clean notebook and make
their best guess at setup.
In the end, Zach Bowie
proved to be both fastest
and toughest of the stout 20
car field. Starting in row
3, Bowie powered his way to
the front on lap 22 and held
the spot until lap 35 when
he tangled with another
competitor. By lap 46, Bowie
was back out front to stay
in the 50 lap tilt, and he
triumphed for his first
career PASS win. Finishing
out victory lane was Ryan
Robinson and multi-time
Oxford Plains Speedway
Champion Matt Dufault.
Jordan Russell was forth and
Mike Haynes, without a
single scratch on his car,
was the fifth place
finisher.

Four-time PASS Champion D.J.
Shaw (#60) and defending
WMMP winner
Derek Griffith (#12)
are two of the biggest names
getting ready for Sunday's
event. |
PASS, NELCAR Teams Ready
to Flock to WMMP Sunday |
N. Woodstock, NH
- Teams from throughout the
Northeast are preparing for
a trip to N. Woodstock, NH's
White Mountain Motorsports
Park (WMMP) this Sunday,
June 7. A four-division
season-opening showdown
featuring the Pro All Stars
Series (PASS) and NELCAR
Legends Tour goes green at
2:00pm with some of the
biggest auto racing names in
the region ready to do
battle.
While
spectator attendance is not
permitted due to state
health and safety
guidelines, excitement
levels are still high for
Sunday's event. Entry lists
have continued to grow
throughout the week, and
it's expected that multiple
series will need last chance
qualifiers to narrow down
the starting field. Add in a
full card of extra-distance
weekly racing on Saturday,
and the weekend shapes up as
a big one for all involved
Fans can still catch all
of Sunday's action live via
pay-per-view on the
Northeast Sports Network
(NMS). For only $25, the
entire family can enjoy a
full afternoon of the
region's stars with more
than 500 laps of action
planned. The race can be
viewed at
www.NSNsports.net
as well as on most mobile
and smart TV platforms.
"We've all been waiting
for this," Hudson, NH's
Derek Griffith said. "It's
time to go racing! We will
miss having our fans in the
stands, but until we see you
again, help support short
track racing (with the
pay-per-view). We can't wait
to be back!" |
|
Up-and-coming
stars such as Vermonter Evan
Hallstrom (#1VT) will take
on
the top dogs
of PASS at White Mountain
Motorsports Park on Sunday.

The PASS Super Late Model
150 headlines Sunday's
program and has received
commitments from a who's-who
of top regional racers.
Griffin, the 2018 PASS
National Champion and winner
of the last PASS event at
White Mountain, was an early
entry into the event. He'll
be joined by a litany of
other former PASS champions,
including four-time and
defending champion D.J. Shaw
of Center Conway, NH;
four-time champion Ben Rowe
of Turner, ME; six-time
champion Johnny Clark of
Farmingdale, ME; and
two-time champion Travis
Benjamin of Morrill, ME.
Shaw, meanwhile, leads a
list of at least three
drivers who plan to do
double-duty this weekend in
both the PASS Super Late
Model event on Sunday and
the Foley Oil & Propane Late
Model feature on Saturday.
Defending Vermont Milk Bowl
winner and 2017 Thunder Road
track champion Bobby
Therrien of Hinesburg, VT
has entered both events.
Longtime Late Model racer
Derek Ming of Island Pond,
VT also plans to race on
both days.
Plenty of
other proven racers are
ready to take on the series
champions. Former Oxford 250
winner Curtis Gerry of
Waterboro, ME; three time
ACT Late Model Tour Champion
Wayne Helliwell of Dover,
NH; three-time Vermont Milk
Bowl winner Nick Sweet of
Barre, VT; former NASCAR
Busch North Champion Kelly
Moore of Scarborough, ME are
just some of the racers
expected on Sunday.
These established names will
be joined by up-and-comers
such 16-year-old Kate Re of
Harrison, ME, who has been a
breakout star of the PASS
Modifieds the last two years
and makes her Super Late
Model debut on Sunday.
Defending American-Canadian
Tour Rookie of the Year and
recent Northeast eClassic
winner Ryan Kuhn of E.
Bridgewater, MA is also
making the trek to the North
Country. |
|
The stars of the PASS
Modifieds also join Sunday's
program as part of a
four-division card. |
The PASS Mods, Honey Badger
Bar & Grill Street Stock
Series, and
GoMotorsportsShop.com
NELCAR Legends Tour are also
opening their 2020 campaigns
this weekend. Defending PASS
Modified Champion Spencer
Morse of Waterford, ME leads
the charge into the White
Mountains. He'll be closely
pursued by 2019 winners
Matty Sanborn, Tyler King,
and Justin Larsen, among
others.
Most of last
year's top point finishers
in the 8-cylinder Honey
Badger Street Stocks are
gearing up for the start of
2020, including Jordan
Russell, Shawn Knight, Skip
Stanley, and Matt Dufault.
The NELCAR Legends Tour
could well end up stealing
the show with one the
biggest fields of the
weekend. Well-known Legend
Car racers such as Jack
Walker, Kevin Oliver, Colby
Meserve, Kevin Girard Jr.,
and Reagan Parent will try
to race their way into
Sunday's main event.
The Pro All Stars Series
season opener at White
Mountain Motorsports Park
goes green at 2:00pm on
Sunday, June 7. The PASS
Super Late Model 150 is part
of a four-series card that
includes the PASS Modifieds,
Honey Badger Bar & Grill
Street Stock Series, and
GoMotorsportsShop.com NELCAR
Legends Tour. Fans can watch
all qualifying and feature
action for $25 via live
pay-per-view on the
Northeast Sports Network.
Spectator attendance is not
permitted due to current
state health and safety
guidelines.
Sunday's
event is the second half a
weekend doubleheader at
White Mountain Motorsports
Park. On Saturday, June 6 at
5:00pm, all five regular
divisions are on the card
with extra-distance
features, including 75 laps
for the Foley Oil & Propane
Late Models and 50 laps for
the Wells River Chevrolet
Flying Tigers. The entire
event can be watched via
pay-per-view on the
Northeast Sports Network for
only $15.
