Griffith Wins the
Aroostook Savings & Loan
Firecracker 200 |
CARIBOU, MAINE (July
3) -For the first time in
eight seasons, the Pro All
Stars Series visited the
famed 1/3-mile Spud Speedway
in Caribou, ME. The track
had not seen stock car
racing since September of
2015, meaning fans were
excited to see short track
racing return to the county.
Twenty-one of the best
in the Northeast and
Mid-Atlantic made the trek
to Spud Speedway for the
Aroostook Savings and Loan
Firecracker 200, a "Road to
Oxford and Richmond"
qualifier event. Two drivers
were unable to make the
start of the event. Kyle
DeSouza of Williamston, SC
had a hard wreck late in
practice which saw his car
slide into the tire barrier
in the first turn and roll
violently before coming to a
stop. The driver would be
okay thanks to the quick
response of safety crews.
Local racer, Tharren
MacDougall also made an
attempt to qualify for the
event but was unable to join
the field for the start of
the 200-lap feature.
Following three quick heat
races won by Derek Griffith,
Cole Butcher and Travis
Benjamin, all of whom were
relegated to 11th through
13th feature starting spots
under the PASS rules (any
prior race winner cannot
start better than 10th for
the remainder of the year),
Garrett Hall and Kyle Reid
would inherit the front row.
Polesitter Garrett
Hall jumped out to the early
lead before Ben Rowe took
over the top spot on Lap 10.
Contact between the two
drivers resulted in a cut
tire on Rowe's No. 4
machine. Hall would retake
the lead on Lap 12 before a
hard-charging DJ Shaw took
the lead on Lap 61. Shaw
would lead until Lap 127
when Derek Griffith would
take over for a short time.
Shaw would take the lead
back on Lap 133 and keep
control until Lap 170 when
Griffith retook the lead and
held on for the checkers,
with an overheating
Tyngsboro Motors Chevrolet.
Shaw and Griffith would be
the class of the field out
front for most of the event,
only facing a challenge from
Eddie MacDonald and Cassius
Clark late in the event.
Shaw held on for 2nd with
Cassius Clark besting Eddie
MacDonald for 3rd. Mike
Hopkins of Hermon, ME would
round out the top 5.
Street Stock racing would be
the undercard with Bryan
Robbins dominating the
30-lap event over Jeff Alley
and Jordan Pearson. Robbins
locked himself into the Ikey
Dorr Memorial Street Stock
race at Speedway 95, set to
run in October.
The
final event on the night was
the 50-lap enduro which
provided a few fireworks of
its own. With red flags for
a rollover and two cars on
fire, the event was a crowd
pleaser. When the checkers
flew, it was Oxford Plains
Speedway regular Josh Knoll
who would take the winner's
trophy and purse back to
Wells, ME. Rounding out the
top five were local racers
Derek Pearson, Wayne Fox,
Jr., James Goodman, and Del
Brissette.
The PASS

Ridge Motor Speedway for the
