Labbe Wins Thunder
Valley National 200 at
Autodrome Chaudiere |
The VR Victoriaville
#36 of Alex Labbe was
disqualified from his heat
race in post-race tech due
to a ride height infraction.
This would place him in the
24th starting position for
the feature event where he
would eventually work his
way to the front and emerge
victorious. By the ½-way
point in the race, Labbe had
moved into the 2nd position
where he would battle for
the win with the runner up,
Joey Doiron in the Wild
Willy’s Burger #73. Patrick
Laperle of St.-Denis Quebec
earned the final podium
finish with his Lasalle Ford
#91.
Center Conway’s
DJ Shaw and Tyler Dippel
from Walkill, NY rounded out
the top-five in the
finishing order. Turner,
Maine natives Mike Rowe and
Ben Rowe were sixth and
seventh across the finish
line. Chicoutimi, Quebec’s
Michael Lavoie ended up in
the eighth position, with
Curtis Gerry of Waterboro
ninth across the finish
line, and Bangor’s Gary
Smith rounding out the
top-ten.
Eight
cautions in the first 100
laps would see five cars
retired prior to the
mandatory caution at Lap
101. The 8F of Durham, NC
native Tate Fogleman came to
a stop on the inside of Turn
1 on Lap 2 bringing out he
first caution of the day and
ultimately seeing that car
retired from the race.
Caution would fly three more
times for minor spins before
Lap 8 which would result in
the 80QC of Donald Theetge
retiring his car from
competition. On Lap 46 the
caution would fly again as
the 2QC of Dany Poulin took
a wild ride off Turn 1.
Poulin emerged from his car
unscathed, but unfortunately
the same could not be said
for the car. On the restart,
the 84QC of Martin Latulippe
and the 98QC of Etienne
Cliché would tangle
resulting in the 6th caution
of the day and would see the
Cliché retired from the
race. Caution #7 was the
result of debris left on the
track when the 16 of Kevin
Roberge broke, ending his
day. Caution would fly one
more time on Lap 81 for a
minor spin, before seeing
the caution at Lap 101 for
the mandatory 10 minute pit
stop to allow teams to make
adjustments, change tires,
and refuel.
At the ½
way break the top three were
the #73 of Doiron having
moved up from the 11th
starting spot, followed the
#36 of Labbe, and Patrick
Laperle in the Lasalle Ford
#91. Starting fourth would
be Ben Rowe in the #4
Hancock Lumber car moving up
from a 21st starting
position. Rounding out the
top five would be the #60
Precision JLM car of DJ Shaw
who started from the rear of
the feature in the 25th
starting position.
Twenty cars returned to
action following the ½ way
pit stop, with all but one
car on the lead lap. Caution
would fly on Lap 116 for the
84QC of Martin Latulippe who
would retire to pit road.
Caution flew again on Lap
118 for an incident in turn
3 between the 40 of Chris
Michaud and the 83 of Martin
Goulet, Jr. which would
result in both cars being
unable to continue. Lap 132
saw the third caution of the
second half when the 97QC
Jacques Poulin spun. This
would lead to the longest
green flag run of the event
(50 laps) before caution was
out once again on Lap 182
for a spin. Following
re-alignment of the field,
the 61 car of William
Roberge was shown the black
flag for not maintaining his
position in line and was
sent to the pits. Four laps
after the restart, as it
looked like the field was
sorting out nicely; caution
would fly for the final time
on Lap 186. The 7L of Glen
Luce and 54 of Johnny Clark
would get together on the
backstretch heading into
turn 3, resulting in both
cars spinning with Luce
hitting the wall in turn 3
ending his day and Clark
spinning, losing a lap but
able to continue.
Berwick, Maine’s Joey Doiron
had checked out on the field
and had victory in his sight
when this late race caution
brought the field back in
tow and put the 36 of Alex
Labbe to the outside of
Doiron on the restart. When
the green flag flew, Doiron
would get the advantage, but
it would be short lived as
Labbe gave Dorion a bump to
move him out of the way and
take the lead on Lap 190.
Doiron would return the
favor on the following lap
and the two would race side
by side for the next several
laps before Labbe would
clear Doiron on Lap 196 and
go on to win the Thunder
Valley National 200.
With his 4th place
finish in the Thunder Valley
National 200, DJ Shaw just
edged out Joey Doiron by a
single point, 358 to 357 for
the Triple Crown
Championship. Mike Rowe will
finish in the third spot
with a total of 342 points.
