Hemric Mounts
Late Charge To Win PASS
South Opener At
Greenville-Pickens |
EASLEY, SC (March 1)
– Daniel Hemric came back
from nearly a lap down and
benefitted from a late
caution to take the lead
from Randy Gentry with 10
laps to go and win the Pro
All Stars Series (PASS)
South Super Late Model
season opener Saturday night
at Greenville-Pickens
Speedway. Hemric’s win in
the Fox Carolina 150 was his
third career PASS South
Super Late Model triumph and
his second behind the wheel
of car owner Dickie
Woodman’s Ford.
“The
plan was to just stay in
front of the leaders and
stay on the lead lap,†said
Hemric in victory lane. “I
thought I had saved enough
and I told them I could go,
but I couldn’t have caught
them if I didn’t have a
caution. We knew if we could
get to lap 130 and have a
shot that we thought we had
the best car here.â€
2013
PASS North Super Late Model
Champion Cassius Clark paced the 33 car
field in qualifying with a
lap of 89.597 miles per hour
around the flat half mile
for his third career fast
qualifying time in PASS
South. Clark would be
relegated to the fifth
starting position after the
top 10 redraw while Garrett
Campbell and Randy Gentry
would move up to the front
row.
At the drop of
the green flag for the Fox
Carolina 150, Campbell and
Gentry quickly distanced
themselves from the star
studded field of PASS Super
Late Model drivers. While
they were racing hard up
front, the rest of the field
deployed various strategies
with the hopes of
positioning themselves for a
late race run for the
victory. 2013 PASS North
runner-up Joey Doiron
started 17th, but was in the
top 10 by lap seven and in
the top five by lap 36.
However, with just past a
third of the race behind
him, Doiron started to fade
and would eventually fall
from the race and finish
26th.
Several other
drivers, including Hemric,
Tyler Church, Cameron
Hayley, Preston Peltier, and
Kyle Benjamin, deployed a
different strategy which saw
them fall out of the top 20
early on. While Peltier and
Benjamin struggled to get on
track, Hemric and the others
raced just in front of the
leader Campbell, barely
staying on the lead lap.
But, despite being nearly a
lap down, Hemric and Hayley
slowly began to power away
from the leaders with both
breaking in to the top five
with less than 30 laps to
go.
Working a slew of
heavy lapped traffic late in
the race, Gentry closed in
on Campbell for the lead.
Using the slower machines of
Peltier and Russell Fleeman
as a pick, Gentry powered by
Campbell to take the lead on
the front straightaway with
23 laps to go.
As
Gentry began to stretch his
advantage up front over
Campbell, Tim Pinion spun in
turn four with 13 laps to go
to bring out the Fox
Carolina 150’s lone caution,
erasing the leaders’ huge
advantage over the rest of
the field. On the restart,
Gentry and Campbell led, but
it was clear Hemric and
Hayley had something left in
reserve. Hemric moved by
Gentry for the lead with 10
laps to go and Hayley
followed by just a few laps
later. Hemric sped to the
checkers to take the win in
the first PASS National
Championship Series race of
2014 over Hayley, Gentry,
Ben Rowe and Campbell.
Rounding out the top ten
were Jared Irvan, Church,
John Hunter Nemechek, Cole
Timm, and Ted Mickelson.
Walker Yates came back
from an early race spin to
take his first career
PASS
Pro Late Model win.
The first incident of the
race occurred on lap nine
when Kerry Lawrence spun on
the front straightaway after
contact from Anthony Anders.
Just four laps later, Yates
was spun from the lead by
Kodie Conner in turn three
resulting in both cars going
to the tail of the field.
The hardest crash of the
night occurred on lap 15
when Anders and rookie Lucas
Jones made contact while
battling for the lead
sending Jones hard into the
inside wall on the
backstretch. Yates and
Conner cycled back around to
the front with Conner taking
the lead with 11 laps to go.
Conner’s time up front was
short-lived though as he
went to the pits with a
transmission leak handing
the lead and eventual
victory to Yates. Rounding
out the top five were
Lawrence, Nick Robinson,
Jacob Schneider, and Matt
Murphy. Randy Porter took
the
Southeast Super Truck
victory over fellow
Greenville-Pickens Speedway
veteran Kenneth Headen, Tim
Lollis, Jamie Tate, and
Wally Fowler.
The
PASS South Super Late Models
and PASS Pro Late Models
will be in action once again
this Saturday night
March
8 at Dillon Motor Speedway
for the 9th Annual South
Carolina Clash.
Allison Legacy and
4-Cylinder Mayhem will also
be in competition.
Qualifying starts at 4 PM
with racing at 6 PM. |

Looking Forward To PASS
Opener At Greenville-Pickens
Speedway |
CHARLOTTE, NC
(February 27) – A star
studded field of North
America’s top short track
drivers are just days away
from taking to the legendary
Greenville-Pickens Speedway
in South Carolina for race
one of the 2014 Pro All
Stars Series (PASS) National
Championship Series. The Fox
Carolina 150 will double as
the first PASS South Super
Late Model race of the
season and will also feature
50 laps for the PASS Pro
Late Models and 75 laps for
the Southeast Super Trucks.
The field of drivers
pre-entered is stacked with
champion drivers including
former PASS National and
PASS North Champion Ben
Rowe, 2013 PASS Pro Late
Model Champion Trevor Noles
and Super Late Model touring
champions Daniel Hemric and
Travis Braden. But, those
are not the only drivers
racing at Greenville-Pickens
Speedway this Saturday night
who have achieved
championship status.
Short track veteran Jay
Fogleman enters the 2014
racing season at a
crossroads. The Durham, NC
driver is coming off one of
the best seasons of his 30
year career. A season that
included winning his second
straight PASS National
Championship, finally
winning the elusive PASS
South title, and a podium
finish in the Oxford 250.
But, despite his success,
Fogleman will trim back his
schedule substantially,
competing in only the PASS
National Championship Series
events in order to spend
more time fostering the
budding career of his son,
Tate.
That will wait
at least one more week,
though, as Fogleman focuses
his attention on this
weekend’s action behind the
wheel at Greenville-Pickens
Speedway. He won a thrilling
PASS South race there in the
summer of 2009 with
conditions much different
than what is expected for
the Fox Carolina 150.
“The racetrack should
have more grip this time of
year and it should be a
different type of race than
what we’ve seen there in the
summer,†said Fogleman.
“It’s all about momentum and
timing because the track is
so flat and so line
sensitive, it’s a driver’s
race track. I’m looking
forward to getting through
this one and then getting to
Dillon and getting on the
pit box to help Tate.â€
Like Fogleman,
Farmington, ME’s Cassius
Clark also captured an
elusive championship in
2014, finally winning the
PASS North title in a tight
three way battle with Joey
Doiron and DJ Shaw. But,
Clark is not new to winning
PASS championships or to
winning races at
Greenville-Pickens Speedway.
Clark won the first ever
PASS South race held at the
historic speedway in 2007. A
year later, he was able to
take home the first PASS
National Championship, again
at Greenville. Clark returns
this year hoping, that with
similar conditions to those
of the fall, it will play
into his hands once again.
“I think the track is
very weather sensitive,â€
said Clark. “It’s a lot like
Hickory in that there can be
grip early in the year, but
later in the year it’s a lot
slicker. We went back there
a few years ago and tried
the top side, we moved up to
the middle of the racetrack
and found grip. But the next
time we went, there was no
grip up top. We probably
won’t have a good idea of
what the track will do until
practice on Friday.â€
Anthony Anders comes to
Saturday night’s Fox
Carolina 150 as a sort of
wildcard. Over the last five
years, Anders has been one
of the Palmetto State’s most
successful drivers. He won a
track championship at Myrtle
Beach Speedway in 2012 and
followed that up by winning
the championship at
Greenville-Pickens last
year, his first title at his
hometrack. But those
championships came behind
the wheel of a Late Model
Stock car. The Easley, SC
driver has only raced his
straight rail chassis
sporadically, with a few
starts at the now closed
Lanier National Speedway and
last year on the short track
at Daytona International
Speedway. This weekend
Anders plans to compete in
both the PASS South Super
Late Model and PASS Pro Late
Model features. Anders hopes
his vast experience at
Greenville-Pickens Speedway,
along with some help from
local PASS South veteran
Randy Gentry, will pay off
with a victory in the Fox
Carolina 150. “Tire
management is definitely
going to be key,†said
Anders. “Greenville is
always tough on tires and
hard to get around with its
flat turns. I think we’re
gonna be at a slight
disadvantage to the PASS
regulars, but I’ve won a lot
of races at Greenville in
Late Model Stocks, including
some 150 lappers. These cars
are racier than what I’m
used to and I’m looking
forward to it. The PASS cars
are just built to race.â€
Among those pre-entered
for the Fox Carolina 150 are
two-time PASS South winner
in 2013, Tyler Church, third
generation racers Jared
Irvan and Tate Fogleman,
veterans Randy Gentry, Joey
Doiron, Jimmy Doyle, Jody
Measamer, and John Batten,
and rookie contenders
Brandon Setzer and Matt
Daley. Entries are
continuing to come in daily
for what looks to be one of
the biggest Super Late Model
races of the Winter.
Action gets under way on
Friday, February 28th at
Greenville-Pickens Speedway
with practice for all
divisions from 2-6 PM. On
Saturday, March 1st, pit
gates will open at 10 AM for
the Fox Carolina 150, with
practice from Noon- 3 PM.
Qualifying will begin at 4
PM and racing will start at
6 PM, featuring 150 laps for
the PASS Super Late Models,
50 laps for the PASS Pro
Late Models and 75 laps for
the Southeast Super Trucks. |
PASS Readies For
Palmetto State Double To
Begin 2014 Season |
CHARLOTTE, NC
(February 20) – As the
remnants of a major winter
storm finally disappear in
the Southeast, Pro All Stars
Series (PASS) Super Late
Model and Pro Late Model
teams up and down the East
Coast are making their final
preparations for the kickoff
to the much anticipated 2014
racing season. And it all
starts with two big weekends
of racing in the state of
South Carolina.
On
March 1, the season gets
under way in the upstate
with the Fox Carolina 150 at
the legendary
Greenville-Pickens Speedway.
Not only will it be the
first race of the year for
the PASS South Super Late
Models and PASS Pro Late
Models, but it will also be
the first of six PASS
National Championship
events. The Fox Carolina 150
will bring together the best
of the Southeast, such as
two-time defending PASS
National Champion Jay
Fogleman, to compete against
top New England short
trackers like Joey Doiron
and former PASS National
Champions Cassius Clark and
Ben Rowe.
Then, just
a week later, the PASS South
Super Late Models and PASS
Pro Late Models head east to
the Palmetto State’s Pee Dee
Region and the Dillon Motor
Speedway for the 9th Annual
South Carolina Clash. Built
and configured in the 1960’s
by Harold Brasington, the
father of nearby Darlington
Raceway and Rockingham
Speedway, Dillon has proven
to be one the most
challenging speedways on the
PASS circuit. Some of the
best PASS has had to offer
over the years have managed
to tame Dillon Motor
Speedway. Drivers like Ryan
Blaney, Ben Rowe, Justin
Wakefield, Preston Peltier,
and Austin Theriault.
But, about the only
thing Greenville-Pickens
Speedway and Dillon Motor
Speedway have in common are
that they are both located
in South Carolina.
Greenville first held stock
car races in 1946 and has
operated every year since
with the exception of 1953.
Dillon was one of the most
popular speedways in the
Carolinas throughout the
1960’s and 1970’s, but was
shuttered for nearly 30
years before Ron Barfield
reopened the track in 2007.
While Greenville-Pickens
measures in at over a
half-mile and Dillon is four
tenths, the horsepower
advantage does not
translate. Greenville’s long
and extremely flat corners
will put handling at a
premium over 150 laps for
the PASS short trackers,
while Dillon’s newer asphalt
and banked turns tends to
make the PASS engine gurus
smile.
With the Fox
Carolina 150 at
Greenville-Pickens and the
9th Annual South Carolina
Clash at Dillon on
back-to-back weekends, the
two challenging South
Carolina ovals will become
an even bigger test for
North America’s top short
track racers. But besides
the PASS Super Late Model
and PASS Pro Late Model
racers who will get to see
Winter’s hard work and long
hours in the shop pay off by
visiting victory lane, the
real winners over the next
couple of weeks will be the
PASS fans. South
Carolina drivers headline
those pre-entered for the
Fox Carolina 150 including
defending Greenville-Pickens
Speedway track champion
Anthony Anders and PASS
veterans Randy Gentry, Clete
Caywood, and Jody Lavender.
Other drivers currently
pre-entered for the Fox
Carolina 150 include Super
Late Model champions Travis
Braden and Daniel Hemric,
PASS North championship
runner-up Joey Doiron,
two-time PASS South winner
in 2013, Tyler Church, third
generation racers Jared
Irvan and Tate Fogleman,
veterans Brandon Ward, John
Batten, Jimmy Doyle and Jody
Measamer, and 2014 PASS
South rookie contenders
Trevor Noles, Brandon
Setzer, and Matt Daley.
Action first gets under
way on Friday, February 28th
at Greenville-Pickens
Speedway with practice for
all divisions from 2-6 PM.
On Saturday, March 1st, pit
gates will open at 10 AM for
the Fox Carolina 150, with
practice from Noon- 3 PM.
Qualifying will begin at 4
PM and racing will start at
6 PM, featuring 150 laps for
the PASS Super Late Models,
50 laps for the PASS Pro
Late Models and 75 laps for
the Southeast Super Trucks.
The Pro All Stars Series
is recognized as North
America’s premier
sanctioning body for asphalt
Super Late Models and boasts
such marquee events as PASS
South’s Easter Bunny 150 at
the historic Hickory Motor
Speedway, the Autobus La
Quebecoise Triple Crown at
Autodrome Chaudière, and the
legendary Oxford 250 at
Oxford Plains Speedway. For

PASS Opener Set
To Make More History At
The Legendary
Greenville-Pickens Speedway |
CHARLOTTE, NC
(February 11) – The Pro All
Stars Series (PASS) looks to
embark on one of its biggest
seasons yet as the series
season opener approaches on
March 1 at the historic
Greenville-Pickens Speedway
in South Carolina. The PASS
National Championship Series
will take center stage as
the PASS South Super Late
Models will be featured in
the Fox Carolina 150. A
strong field of PASS Pro
Late Models will make their
first ever trip to
Greenville for 50 laps of
short track excitement. And,
if that was not enough, the
strong weekend of racing
will also include the first
of three companion events
with PASS for the Southeast
Super Trucks.
Greenville-Pickens Speedway
first began hosting stock
car races in 1946 after a
time in which it operated as
a horse racing facility.
Man-made horsepower has been
the name of the game at GPS
for nearly 70 years now. A
track made famous by the
names of former track
champions that now line its
walls. Names like Pearson,
Earnhardt, Lindley, and
Porter just to name a few.
The Fox Carolina 150
will mark a return to the
historic half-mile speedway
for the PASS Super Late
Models for the first time
since 2010. Ironically, the
first PASS National
Championship Series race of
2014 takes place at the same
track where the first
champion was crowned.
Cassius Clark of Farmington,
ME held off North Carolina’s
John Stancill to become the
first ever PASS National
Champion in 2008. That came
on the heels of Clark
winning at GPS in the 2007
Howler 150 when the PASS
South Super Late Models
first debuted at the
speedway. Clark will be back
this year at the Fox
Carolina 150 to make his
first run at the title in a
several years.
Alex
Haase swept both races at
Greenville-Pickens Speedway
in 2008 en route to the PASS
South Super Late Model
championship that year. In
2009, Jay Fogleman outlasted
Brian Ickler and Alex
Fleming to win the
Firecracker 125 in what many
have heralded as one of the
greatest PASS South races of
all time. Fogleman followed
his win in July of that year
up with a runner-up finish
to 6-time PASS North
Champion Johnny Clark in the
Howler 150 at GPS. Although
racing only a limited
schedule in 2014 as he
pursues a third straight
PASS National Championship,
Fogleman will no doubt be
among the favorites for
victory in the Fox Carolina
150.
PASS last
visited Greenville-Pickens
Speedway in 2010 when Ryan
Blaney took his second win
of that season in the
Firecracker 125. In 2014,
the PASS South Super Late
Models return for two big
events which include the Fox
Carolina 150 on March 1 and
the 9th Annual Firecracker
125 on July 3. The PASS Pro
Late Models and Southeast
Super Trucks will also be in
competition on both dates.
Among those pre-entered
for the Fox Carolina 150 are
two-time PASS South winner
in 2013, Tyler Church, third
generation racers Jared
Irvan and Tate Fogleman,
veterans Brandon Ward and
John Batten, and rookie
contender Matt Daley.
Entries are continuing
to come in daily for what
looks to be one of the
biggest Super Late Model
races of the Winter.
