Oxford Plains Speedway on August 26th

#6 Troy Morse, 3rd; Winner #5 Chris Staples, and #99 Dana Grover, 3rd.

Chris Staples Grabs Win #3 in PASS Modifieds

(Naples, ME – August 26, 2006) Chris Staples came into Saturday night’s 50-lap feature at Oxford Plains Speedway hot off a win at Riverside Speedway in Groveton, NH with a 16 point lead over Jason Taylor and a 20 point margin over Dana Grover in the 2006 point’s race. Dana had a lousy night at Riverside and gave up second in points to Jason, but he came to Oxford and predicted a podium finish.

At the green flag, Dale Cullivan of Palermo, ME in the #25 took the point followed by Steve Bennett, Jr of Buckfield, ME in the #12. By lap 5, Staples had the Dallas Oil #5 up to fifth from his tenth-place start, and by lap 10 he was challenging Cullivan for the lead. Two laps later Staples went around Cullivan and took the lead.

Grover, in the E.J. Prescott sponsored #99, was coming as well, and on lap 14 was challenging Bennett for third. The two went side-by-side until lap 18 when Bennett was trapped behind lapped traffic and Grover went to the outside and into third.

A quick yellow for a spin in turn four helped Grover close up on Staples and Cullivan for the restart. Cullivan’s #25 didn’t like the outside and Grover slipped by on the inside to second with Troy Morse of Bridgton, ME in the #6 following Grover through to third.

A little further back, the #2 of newcomer Gary Norris, Jr of W. Gardner, ME and the #8 of Searsmont’s Jason Taylor were making their way to the front. On lap 38, Norris was fourth and Taylor was right there as well.

The second yellow of the night fell on lap 45 for another spin in turn four, and Staples and Grover were drawn back to the field. On the restart, Grover was on the outside and was probably thinking about Cullivan’s problems on the earlier restart; Morse was third with Norris on the outside behind Grover.

Grover hung on the outside, but by the time they go to the backstretch Staples was pulling away and Dana settled into second, with Morse and Norris battling for third. At the line, it was Staples, Grover, Morse by a hair followed by Bennett, Taylor, Jeremy McCormick of Brooks, ME in the #73, Greg Ellis of Hermon in the #29, Cullivan, Dana Reed of Shapleigh, ME in the #60 who battled engine problems all night, the #1 of Larry Emerson of Durham, ME, the #05 of Dennis Scribner of Otisfield, Donnie Mehuren of Searsmont in the #76, and the #72 of Chad Dow of Fairfield, ME and Richie Morse of Waterville, ME in the #34, both of whom retired early with mechanicals woes.

Grover made it to the podium, but was one spot short of where he wanted to be and gave up a few more points to Staples who extended his slim point’s lead to 18. But Dana did jump over Taylor and regained second by four points over Taylor.

Chris Staples Solidifies Lead in PASS Modifieds

(Naples, ME -- August 5, 2006) Chris Staples of Brunswick, ME and the Dallas Oil #5 team came into the PASS Modified race at Summerfest 2006 at Riverside Speedway, Groveton, NH with a slim six point lead in 2006 points over Dana Grover and the #99E. J. Prescott team from Waterford. ME.

Staples started seventh, one spot behind Grover in the 30-lap feature. Chris got a great start and was up to fourth when Grover ran into trouble on the backstretch on lap 15 and slid into an infield light pole in turn three with heavy damage that finished the #99 for the night. Richie Morse also went to the pits on lap 15 and was six laps down when he returned.

Jason Taylor from Searsmont, ME was third in the point’s chase only eight points behind Grover as the evening started. Jason and the #8 seized the opportunity when Grover had his troubles and followed Staples to the front.

At the finish, it was Staples and Taylor first across the line, with rookie Greg Ellis of Hermon, ME in the #29 third for his first top five of the season. Dana Reed of Shapleigh, ME also had a good night as he brought the #60 to fourth. Troy Morse of Bridgton, ME in the #6 was fifth, followed by Steve Bennett, Jr of Buckfield, ME in the #12, Richie Morse of Waterville, ME in the #34, and Grover.

Staples Three-Peats at Oxford

(Naples, ME -- May 28, 2006) Chris Staples of Brunswick, ME came to Oxford Plains Speedway Oxford, ME Saturday night undefeated at Oxford in the PASS Modified Series. Chris took both Oxford races in 2005 and was leading the points coming into Oxford with seconds at both Speedway 95 and Canaan in the two races so far in 2006.

Greg Ellis of Hermon, ME and Dana Reed of Shapleigh, ME were on the point for the green in the Cole-Man Concrete 40-lap feature. Reed took the lead down the backstretch with Ellis falling in behind him. Troy Morse slid off between turns three and four after some help and brought out the first yellow. Troy kept it going and stayed on the lead lap.

On lap 4, Richie Morse of Waterville, ME took the lead in his sharp looking #34, with Dana Grover of Waterford, ME in the #99 and Steve Bennett, Jr of Buckfield, ME in the Cole-Man’s Concrete #12 following him through.

Grover moved to the outside to test the newly applied “Ryan’s Magic Goop.” The first application was before opening day and fans saw some great two-groove racing that day with the PASS Super Late Models and in all the divisions. After all the recent rain it was decided that a second dose wouldn’t hurt, and Grover found it to his liking as he took the lead on lap 18.

A lap 19 tangle between Chad Dow and Steve Bennett brought out the second caution, and Bennett had to pit with a flat right front. Dale Cullivan of Palermo, ME in the #25 was making his first start in a TAT Link-Belt Modified, but showed he wasn’t all that rusty after several tours of duty as a U. S. Army Warrant Officer in Iraq as he spun to avoid Dow and Bennett.

On the restart, it was Grover and Morse, with Staples in his very colorful #5 and Jason Taylor of Searsmont, ME in the #8 up from their ninth- and tenth-place starting spots up to third and fourth. The top four stayed that way for several laps until Taylor finally got by Morse for third.

With five laps to go, it was still Grover with Staples side-by-side lap after lap. Taylor was lurking in third when Richie Morse and Chad Dow got together in turn one. Dow limped to the pits with a flat right front and Morse went off on the hook.

With two laps to go, Staples drove it hard into turn three on the outside and it stuck. He pulled away from Grover down the front stretch to take the win -- his third in a row at Oxford. Taylor was third, Cullivan back up to fourth from the back, young Jeremy McCormick of Brooks, ME in the #73 fifth in only his second start, Dana Reed in the #60 sixth, Dennis Scribner of Otisfield, ME in the #05 finishing his maiden voyage in a modified in seventh, Troy Morse back to eighth after the early spin, Steve Bennett, Jr ninth, and Greg Ellis tenth.

Jason Taylor Takes PASS Modified Win
at Canaan on 5/20

(Naples, ME – May 20, 2006)  Jason Taylor of Searsmont, ME made the trip over the mountains worthwhile as he drove his #8 to the win in the PASS Modified feature at Canaan Fair Speedway, Canaan, NH on Turn Back the Clock Night Saturday night May 20th.

The fans who braved the afternoon showers and the threat of more rain all night got their $5.00 worth and saw some great old-time racing at old time prices. General Admission for adults was $5.00, with juniors, $3.00, and kids were $2.00 on Turn Back the Clock Night.

Taylor started up front for the 40-lap tussle, but he had a tough time shaking Troy Morse of Bridgton, ME in the #6 for the first 15 laps, but he finally was able to pull out to a three car-length lead, only to get hauled back to the pack with a couple of cautions.

Chris Staples of Brunswick in the #5 Dallas Oil Machine was quietly making his way to the front from back in the pack. At lap 30, he had disposed of Dana Grover in the E. J. Prescott #99 and then passed Richie Morse in the great looking #34. By lap 33, he was by Richie's brother Troy in the #6, and the hunt was on. With two to go, he was on Taylor's bumper, but he ran out of laps as Taylor took the win. Staples settled for second, with Troy Morse third, Dana Grover fourth, and Richie Morse fifth.

On Saturday night May 27th, the PASS Modifieds return to the friendly confines of Oxford Plains Speedway, Oxford, ME for the Cole-Man’s Concrete sponsored feature.
