(Naples, ME – June 5,
2005) The PASS Modifieds took to the tight quarter mile at Riverside
Speedway Saturday night for their 30 lap feature with Chris Staples’ #5 and
Katie Hagar’s #14 on the front row. Staples took the lead on lap two with
Hagar ducking in line behind the #5 as Steve Bennett, Jr. in the #12 faded
back after he brushed the front stretch wall. The two frontrunners pulled
away as the #9 of defending 2004 PASS Modified Champion Mark Lucas, Jason
Taylor in the #8, and Chad Dow in the #72 were making their way to the
front.
At halfway, it was still Staples and Hagar, but a spin by Greg Veinote’s #
07 slowed the field for the first yellow and brought the leaders back to the
pack. On the restart, Staples screamed off into turn one, but the rest of
the field bunched up allowing the #9 of Lucas to follow Staples on the
inside into second as the #14 of Hagar and Wayne Allard’s #15 tangled
between turns one and two with Allard going up and over Hagar’s left front.
Both cars were through for the night.
On the restart with 10 to go, it was the rookie Staples in only his second
start of the season with Lucas on the outside looking for another win. But
it was Staples day as he pulled away from Lucas over the final laps and took
down his first win in only his second start. Jason Taylor in the #8 was
third, Dana Grover in the #99 fourth, and #34 Richie Morse in fifth.
