Wiscasset Raceway and
mother nature finally saw eye to eye Saturday as a fast field of Pro Stock racers and a
grandstand packed with Pro Stock fanatics enjoyed a picture-perfect autumn day of racing.
Whited RV and Truck Center Qualifying Day kicked off the Pro All Stars sanctioned DNK
Select Used Cars Big Dawg Challenge and the action was fast and furious. Sunoco Race Fuels Time Trials kicked off the afternoons events and a familiar face topped the charts once again as 2003 PASS Champion Ben Rowe reeled off a quick lap of 14.854 seconds to nip Johnny Clark for the honors by just five one-thousandths of a second. Cassius Clark tripped the lights third with Sam Sessions fourth and Scott Chubbuck fifth. Tracy Gordon timed in sixth with Gary Smith seventh and Larry Gelinas eight. 2003 Pro All Stars Rookie of the Year Travis Kheil earned the ninth spot and Nova Scotian Scott Fraser rounded out the top ten. Heat Race #1: Rowes fast time placed him on the pole for the 1st 50 lap heat race with Chubbuck along side and the five time Wiscasset Raceway Champ got the jump at the green, opening up an eight car lead over the double zero. Chubbuck withstood several restart challenges and led Rowe by 10 car lengths at the halfway mark. The last 30 laps rolled by caution free and Chubbuck earned the number one starting spot for the Big Dawg. Ben Rowe was a distant second with Mike Rowe third and Jarod Robie fourth. Dave Gorveatt, Paul Pierce and Allan Wilson took down the remaining Big Dawg qualifying spots. Chubbuck will start on the pole Sunday in his Cushman Competition Ford Taurus #29 Heat Race #2: Johhny Clark held the number one slot for this heat with Tracy Gordon alongside. Clark jumped out to a quick lead and Scott Fraser slipped under Gordon for second with Joe Squelia fourth and Stan The Man Meserve fifth. Gordon raced under Fraser on lap ten to regain the second spot and tried to give chase to Clark. Meanwhile Meserve was proving that he still had the touch to get around Wiscasset, moving up to fourth on lap 15 and setting his sights on Fraser for third. At the half way it was Clark by seven car lengths over Gordon then ten back to Fraser. The race went green to checkers caution free and Johhny Clark led them all followed by Gordon, Fraser and Meserve. Jim McCallum came home in the fifth spot with Dale Shaw and Gary Drew completing the top seven qualified cars. Johnny Clarks DNK Select Used Cars Chevrolet #54 will start the Big Dawg Challenge from the outside of row one. Heat Race #3: Cassius Clark had one of the fastest cars all day long in Big Dawg practice and the second generation Farmington Flyer started on the pole with Gary Smith alongside. Clark took command at the green with Billy Whorff Jr. and Jeff Taylor under Smith for second and third. Clark held off Whorff on several early restarts and built up a comfortable margin over Whorff, Taylor, Kenny Wright and Smith. Smith took back the fifth spot with ten to go, and at the stripe it was Cassius Clark taking down the victory with Whorff second, Jeff Taylor third and Gary Smith fourth. Kenny Wright, Scott Robbins and Scott Mulkern rounded out the qualifiers. Clark will start his Team EJP/PEP Transportation Ford Taurus #8 on the inside of row number two. Heat Race #4: 2001 PASS Champion Sudn Sam Sessions was on the pole with Larry Gelinas on the outside. Gelinas jumped out front on the initial green but Sessions powered back under Gelinas for the top spot. Travis Benjamin, Richie Dearborn and Big John Phippen rounded out the top five. Gelinas reclaimed the lead on an early restart as Richie Dearborn and Donnie Whitten made the move under Phippen for fourth and fifth. Whitten took the forth spot away from Dearborn on lap nine only to hand it back on lap eighteen. Session reclaimed the lead at the halfway mark with Gelinas, Benjamin, Dearborn and Whitten trailing. Sessions opened up a solid lead over Gelinas to claim the win with Benjamin third, Whitten back up to fourth and Dearborn fifth. Chuck LaChance and John Phippen round out the heat four qualifiers. Sam Sessions will start the DNK Select Big Dawg Challenge on the outside of row two in his Call of the Wild RV/Auburn Metal Fabrication Chevrolet Monte Carlo #0. Sundays action kicks off at noon with the B main last chance qualifier, followed by the 400 lap, $100,000.00 to win DNK Select Big Dawg Challenge at 2:15. Tickets are still available at the Wiscasset Raceway box office. |
