Dawg Rain Postpose

Big Dawg Challenge Postponed Until
Columbus Day

The rains came to Wiscasset Raceway Sunday just as the field was rolling onto the track, neccesitating postponement of the DNK Select Big Dawg Challenge until Monday, October 13th. Grandstands will open at 9:00 AM with pre-race ceremonies scheduled for Noon and the start of the Big Dawg Challenge at 12:30.

The rains held off long enough for the preliminaries and Wayne Helliwell and John Fleming brought the “B” main down to the green. The “last chance” qualifier got off to a rough start when Doug White’s 45 got into the tires in turn one, landing upside down on the race track, just as Bub Bilodeau slid off of turn four in Brock Gerry’s #44. Both drivers were unhurt and Bilodeau returned for the restart.

Helliwell grabbed the top spot when the race resumed with Flemming second, Darren Ripley third and Bill Penfold fourth. The caution flew for Bilodeau once again, this time for mechanical woes that oiled down the race track. Helliwell took the point on the restart but Fleming slipped back to fifth with Ripley now second, Penfold third and Bobby Allen fourth. Fleming and John Rideout both pitted and returned to the rear of the field.

Helliwell once again controlled the restart but Penfold got past Ripley for second and soon thereafter gace up third to Allen. At the half way mark it was Helliwell and Penfold nose-to-tail with a gap back to Bobby Allen, Patrick LePerle, Freddy Query and Steve Knowlton. Query found the outside groove to his liking and quickly did away with Allen and LePerle to run third. Knowlton lost a heated battle with Allen and LePerle and spun to the infield, bringing out the caution on lap thirty-two. Helliwell retained control at the green over Penfold, Query, Dan McKeage, LePerle, Allen and Knowlton.

At the checker it was Helliwell the victor over Penfold, McKeage and Query with Knowlton racing his way back to fifth. Patrick Leperle and Bobby Allen earned the final Big Dawg transfer spots.

PASS provisionals went to Travis Kheil and Kirk Thibeau, the Wiscasset Raceway provisional to Peter Oakes and the fast time provisional to John Flemming.
