Martin Wins PASS Thriller
at White Mountain

Rick Martin took over the race lead with seven laps remaining and powered to his first Pro All Stars Series feature win in Saturday night’s Pro All Stars 150 at White Mountain Motorsports Park in North Woodstock NH. Ben Rowe tore through the field after losing a left rear tire (and a lap) earlier in the race to grab second and Gary Smith raced home a strong third.

Martin’s G. Lopes Construction Chevrolet was strong all race long but the early battle up front was Rowe and Cassius Clark. Rowe grabbed the lead from the pole position as honorary starter Mike Mayberry celebrated his twelfth birthday by unfurling the green. Johnny Clark took over second from Cassius on lap thirty four and challenged Rowe for the race lead with Clark dogging Rowe on every lap. Sam Sessions joined the pair up front and the trio of PASS regulars went to war for the point. Johnny Clark finally wrestled the lead away from Rowe and the reason soon became apparent as Rowe spun with a flat left rear, losing a lap to the leaders in the process. The caution also ended another good run for Cassius Clark who took a hit in the backstretch wall when the front of the field checked up for Rowe’s spin.

At the halfway mark it was Clark over Sessions with Martin lurking in third, Gary Smith fourth and Gege Gravel fifth. Dave Gorveatt, Larry Gelinas, Travis Kheil, Scott Chubbuck and Mike Rowe completed the top ten. Clark and Sessions resumed the battle royal for the lead and Clark had the measure of Sessions for the next fifty laps although the 2001 series champion was looking high and low for a way around the series point leader. The opportunity finally came on lap 132 and Sessions powered under Clark for the race lead. Meanwhile, Ben Rowe was putting on a passing clinic, battling back under green flag conditions to regain a spot on the lead lap on lap 122. Rowe benefited from a timely caution at lap 134 to come around to the tail of the lead lap and set the stage for a charge to the front of the field. The race’s fourth caution waved on lap141 with Sessions leading and Clark on his back bumper. At the green Clark had a slight advantage but Sessions battled back on the inside and the pair got together several times and Clark spun in turn two, sending him to the tail end of the lead lap. Sessions was sent to the rear for his role in the altercation, handing the race lead to Martin for the night’s final restart. The veteran Pro Stock competitor knew what to do and fought of his challengers to record his first Pro All Stars Series win. Ben Rowe made an all out charge to the front in the last seven laps, just nipping Smith for second at the checkers.

Preliminary action saw Rowe capture the Sunoco Race Fuels fast time award with a lap of 12.258 seconds (88.106 MPH) topping Johnny Clark (12.318 seconds/87.677 MPH) for the honors. Rowe also captured the dash race over Cassius Clark, Martin and Johnny Clark. Heat race wins went to Gege Gravel and Donnie Lashua and Tracy Gordon won the consolation round. Corey Williams earned the Northern Race Tires/PASS Rookie of the Race award for his twelfth place run.
