50th Annual Spencer
Group Paving
Oxford 250 is less
than 60 days away! |
Oxford
ME -- Any event
that survives and
thrives for 50 years
is bound to be
something special.
In August of this
year, one of the
biggest short track
races in the
country, the Oxford
250, will crown a
50th champion of the
famed race which
started as a 200 lap
open back in 1974.
In any given year,
Super Late Model
teams up and down
the Eastern Seaboard
circle this event on
the calendar, and
this year's 50th
edition milestone is
making it even more
enticing.
Sixty drivers have
already filed their
entry for the
landmark 50th race.
With a history of
winners that boasts
drivers like Ricky
Craven, Mike Rowe,
Kyle Busch, Kevin
Harvick and Chuck
Bown and more
recently short track
aces like Bubba
Pollard, Cassius
Clarke, and Cole
Butcher, it's no
wonder every
successful driver
would like nothing
more then to etch
their name in the
record books as the
50th winner.
One such driver
who hopes to score
his first 250 win is
19 year old Kulwicki
Development Driver
Program (KDDP)
candidate Max
Cookson. As a
rookie, the Palmyra
youngster beat out
all the veterans to
score a Super Late
Model championship
in the highly
competitive Oxford
championship series
in 2022. Cookson
also ran near the
front of the 49th
annual 250, leading
nearly 50 laps
before coming home
in fifth in his
maiden voyage in the
late summer classic.
Cookson parlayed
that experience into
a late season PASS
victory, and
currently leads the
way in PASS and
Oxford Points
through the middle
of June.
"The Oxford 250 is
the one race
everyone dreams
about winning up
here in the
Northeast. We had a
really good car last
year and gained a
lot of experience.
We have gotten off
to a great start
this year and hope
we can use those
experiences to run
near the front
again. If we can be
there with a shot at
the end, that's all
we can ask for,"
Said Cookson.
Predicting a
winner of the annual
August race is akin
to picking the
correct lottery
numbers. The tricky
3/8 mile speed plant
in Oxford is known
to demand top notch
preparation from
crews, a driver
capable of
modulating the right
foot, a crew that
can react to
changing conditions,
and just a little
bit of luck. Deep
fields of talent,
high quality
equipment, and in
some cases deep
pockets battle with
some of the best
smaller budget
minded teams in the
business. History,
however, shows that
money, experience,
and preparation do
not necessarily pave
the way to victory
lane. Sometimes it's
still the dark horse
that prevails
This year's
first entrant,
Jeremie Whorff, was
exactly that back in
2006 when he beat
none other than his
own father to log
his first, and to
date only, 250
triumph. Of the
nearly 70 cars in
attendance that day,
Jeremie was not on
many lists as a
potential winner,
but at the end of
the day his #00 was
first across the
line.
Reading through the
entrants as of June
23rd is like reading
a who's who of Super
Late Model racing in
the northeast and
beyond. 2018 Oxford
250 champion Bubba
Pollard is slated to
make his 6th attempt
at scoring another
250. Pollard,
unusually, won his
250 in his first
start. The tricky
Oxford pavement is
known to stump even
the best drivers and
crews in their
maiden voyage.
Pollard's victory
was not without
luck, however, as
the Georgia driver
struggled to find
the needed grip
until he switched
cars halfway through
the weekend. From
there, he was able
to utilize his long
distance race
experience to
patiently work his
way to the front at
the end of 250 green
flag laps.
Pollard owns one of
the 17 titles on the
current entry list.
A few winners
entered are
defending champion
Cole Butcher, father
and son combo Mike
and Ben Rowe,
Cassius Clark,
two-time winner
Eddie MacDonald,
Glen Luce, Gary
Drew, Curtis Gerry,
and 2020 winner
Johnny Clark among
others.
Asked
what it would mean
to score another
victory in the 50th
edition, Hallowell,
ME native Johnny
Clark said, "When I
won it in 2020 it
was definitely a
special time,
especially after I
had tried for so
many years. But it
was only in front of
a few fans (Covid
restrictions).
Winning the 50th
would easily be the
crowning win of my
career and certainly
would rank right up
there with my 7 PASS
championships."
Always a top 5
contender, Clark
felt a lot of lows
participating in the
250 over 20 years
before scoring that
elusive victory.
"One year we led
about half the race
and had a very fast
car but got caught
up in a crash not of
our doing that took
us out. Another year
we were leading with
less than a 20 to go
when a late race
yellow gave Mike
Rowe a chance to
restart behind me on
fresh tires and I
just couldn't hold
him off." In 2020,
fate smiled on Clark
as he battled with
Jeff Taylor when a
pit stop miscue put
the nine-time Oxford
weekly series
champion behind
enough so that laps
ran out before he
had a chance to make
his way back to
battle for the lead.
One list
many very
accomplished drivers
hope to remove
themselves from is
the non-winners
list. Glancing
through that side of
the chart shows some
drivers with resumes
that list multiple
championships, big
wins, and perennial
contenders. DJ Shaw,
Tim Brackett, the
aforementioned Jeff
Taylor, Derrick
Griffith, Joey
Doiron, and Dave
Farrington Jr. are
all drivers who have
been at the top of
the game for many
years but are still
chasing that first
250 triumph.
"We are looking
forward to the 50th
Spencer Group Paving
Oxford 250," said
PASS President Tom
Mayberry. "This is a
pretty special race
in any season, but
to be involved with
the 50th is
something even more
special. Interest is
at an all-time high
from competitors,
fans, and sponsors,
and we think
everyone is going to
want to be a part of
the biggest race in
Oxford 250 history
in some way. We
definitely expect
everyone is going to
bring their A-game
to try to win the
50th Oxford 250. We
have a few more
things in the works
that will also help
make this a
memorable event."
One such special
event is the $100
lap leader program
has been extended
for some laps to
$150 per lap. Under
this celebration
format, the lap
leader will still
receive the
traditional $100 per
lap led, but for the
selected laps,
position 2 will pay
$30, and position 3
will pay $20.
Spencer Group
Paving, LLC (SGP)
was recently
announced as the
title sponsor for
the 50th annual
race. SGP President
Dennis Spencer Jr.
is also a competitor
who has won a PASS
race at OPS and
consistently runs at
the front. "Well,
obviously winning
the 250 would be the
ultimate
achievement. I've
run pretty well in a
few of them, but the
cards haven't fallen
my way. Hopefully
2023 is the year."
Every driver
wants to end the day
on August 27th
holding that trophy
high as the 50th all
time winner of the
Spencer Group Paving
Oxford 250.
"The caliber of
entries we have so
far is just
unbelievable. Just
when I think the
roster of drivers
can't get any
better, it does. I
think this could be
the most competitive
250 yet," said
Mayberry.

Spencer
Group Paving to
Headline the
50th
Oxford 250 |
Oxford
ME -- Officials
at Oxford Plains
Speedway (OPS)
announced today that
Spencer Group Paving
(SGP) has signed on
as the headline
sponsor for the 50th
Annual Oxford 250.
The milestone event
of the legendary
race will be
contested on August
27th, 2023.
"Spencer Group
Paving has been a
tremendous supporter
of Oxford Plains
Speedway and The Pro
All Stars Series
over the last four
or five years. I
can't think of a
better partner for
one of the biggest
races in North
America," said OPS
owner Tom Mayberry.
"Locking this in a
few months in
advance also allows
us to put our focus
on making it the
best race we can."
Nearly 60
drivers have already
sent in
entries for the 50th
Annual Spencer Group
Paving Oxford 250,
with many more
expected over the
next 90 days. Former
winners Bubba
Pollard and Cassius
Clark, are the most
recent to declare,
joining defending
champion Cole
Butcher.
"I
grew up watching my
racing heroes and
dreaming about
competing in the
Oxford 250," said
SGP President and
Super Late Model
competitor Dennis
Spencer Jr. "To be
able to actually put
our name on such a
big race in its 50th
year is beyond
anything I had ever
considered. When Tom
(Mayberry)
approached me about
this, it was a no
brainer really."
Founded in 2011,
SGP is a mid-sized
paving company based
in Turner Maine,
specializing in MDOT
roads, town roads,
and large scale
parking lots.
Spencer Paving Group
prides themselves in
quality of work and
superior
craftsmanship.
"We are going to
be working with
Dennis and his team
on some things
around the speedway
to help improve the
physical plant for
the upcoming race,"
said Mayberry. "SGP
has done work for us
before, and it has
always been top
notch."
Mayberry also noted
some other special
items were in store
for the 50th edition
of the Spencer Group
Paving Oxford 250
that would be
announced in the
coming months. One
such special event
is the $100 lap
leader program has
been extended to
$150 per lap. Under
this celebration
format, the lap leader
will still receive
the traditional $100
per lap led, but
for the selected
laps, position 2 will
pay $30, and
position 3 will pay
$20.

"I think that is
a pretty neat deal,"
said Spencer. "I
know I have run 2nd
or 3rd at times in
some 250s and it
would have been nice
to collect some lap
money for that. I'm
glad to be a part of
that this year."
A pedigree of
notable racers over
the previous years
has made the Spencer
Group Paving Oxford
250 one of the most
prestigious short
track races in the
land that seems to
sit on the bucket
list of some of the
most successful
drivers. Notable
national drivers
like Kyle Busch and
Kevin Harvick
entered and won well
after their careers
were established.
Others like Ricky
Craven and Chuck
Bown used wins in
the historic race to
propel their careers
forward.
"With the caliber of
entries we have so
far, I think this
could be the most
competitive 250
yet," said Mayberry.
No matter the
background, every
driver wants to etch
their name in that
trophy as the 50th
all time winner of
the Spencer Group
Paving Oxford 250.

Aroostook.
The Weston

NESS Gears Up for a Big
Year Two |
Naples ME - Excitement is
building in anticipation of the
sophomore season for The New England
Super Modified Tour (NESS) which is
kicking off its steady nine race
schedule at the Thunder Road Speed
bowl on June 9th. With less than
three weeks until opening day at the
"Nations Site of Excitement",
drivers are busily preparing their
high powered, big winged
Supermodifieds to turn sub 10 second
laps around the steeply banked 1/4
mile oval in Barre Vermont.
The 2023 edition of NESS includes a
pair of visits to the aforementioned
Thunder Road with a second date on
September 30th. Oxford Plains
Speedway will dot the schedule three
times with dates on July 8th, August
5th, and August 26th as a part of
the 50th annual Oxford 250 weekend.
White Mountain Motorsports Park has
one date on July 14th and a 2nd to
be confirmed on September 16th.
Finally the High banked 5/8 Mile
Thompson Speedway Plays host to NESS
on June 21st and again on October
7th as a part of the World Series of
racing.
Officials on the
NESS tour have worked hard to keep
the schedule compact and easy on the
teams with as few conflicts as
possible. NESS has also strived to
create a rule book that promotes
close competition, fair and
equitable rules, and cost
containment to reign in spiraling
costs for all teams. "One of the
biggest things NESS has done is cut
down on travel cost," said car owner
Howie Lane. "There is a lot of
driver's right here in New England
with Supermodifieds that just can't
afford to travel to Ohio and
Michigan to race. These teams are
made up of guys that have to be at
work Monday morning. NESS gives us a
place to race without having to book
hotel rooms and travel hundreds of
miles."
The sentiment was
echoed by Windham Maine's Bobby
Timmons III. "For us, we just love
Supermodified racing and have always
had to travel. It's nice having a
big block series that races in our
back yard." said Timmons. The
Timmons family has a long tradition
of Supermodified racing with Timmons
III being a third generation driver,
and the NESS tour has given them the
ability to add more races to their
schedule.
The
June 9th
opening day at Thunder Road
is shaping up to be one of the best
NESS shows yet. Lane cited the
smaller tracks on the NESS tour as
another added safety benefit. "These
smaller tracks naturally keep speeds
in check and the racing close, said
Lane. "Things happen very fast in a
Supermodified." Lane also cited the
possibility of higher car counts at
the opener in Vermont. "With all the
guys I have talked to, I'd say we
may have 12 to 14 entries in Thunder
Road including guys like Ben Seitz,
Anthony Nocella, Russ Wood, and Matt
Swanson. That many cars on that
small track should make for some
great racing."
Inaugural NESS Champion
Robbie
Summers
#5 has
also filed an entry for Thunder Road
as he plans to defend his title in
2023. In addition to cost savings on
travel, Summers cites other cost
savings measures implemented by
officials on the NESS tour.
"Everything has changed so much
since Covid and the cost of
everything has gone up so much. NESS
has made the 572 Spec motor option
available which saves about 10 to 15
thousand dollars on a motor. But
they have also implemented a gear
rule for the open motors, and by
doing that they have made them last
1 to 2 years now instead of 6 races.
That's a big help."
Supermodified racing is a "different
kind of racing," said Summers. Big
Block engines mounted on the side of
the car, giant wings atop the
chassis, and huge slick tires mean
speeds not commonly seen at the
local short track. Typically in
racing, speed means more money, and
that is where NESS steps in. Said
Summers, "They (NESS) have done
everything in their power to make it
affordable and keep it alive while
bringing in new blood." Local short
track aces like Derek Griffith, Nick
Sweet, and Derek Ranstrom have all
taken turns behind the wheel of a
Supermodified, with Griffith
snagging a win at Oxford last year.
The NESS tour has also
implemented additional protocols
like the tire program in order to
help even the competition. Drivers
now must chose and mount their tires
at the race track on race day vs in
advance. This is a regulation that
helps monitor any chemical altering
of tires pervious to the event, and
therefore cutting down on more costs
and man power.NESS president
Tom Mayberry
is optimistic for the coming season.
"We have had a tremendous amount of
interest in the off-season," said
Mayberry. "We think this is on the
verge of becoming something big
enough to do 8 to 10 very big races
every year. We are going to keep
working on cost savings so we can
build this thing into something
special."
With the unique
appearance of a Supermodified, the
high speeds, and a crop of new
drivers and wily veterans, the NESS
tour is poised to launch to the next
level in 2023.

PASS
Releases 2023
Schedule |
Naples,
Maine -
Officials at Pro All
Stars Series (PASS)
today announced a
diverse and well
spaced 18 race schedule
highlighted by the
50th Annual Oxford
250 at the end of
August. The 2023
tour will visit nine
different tracks in
six different states
before it crowns its
champions at the
season ending PASS
400 Weekend at
Oxford Plains
Speedway in
Mid-October.
"One thing we
wanted to do this
year was try to
provide a little
extra time between
some races where
teams would have a
chance to reset and
better prepare,"
Said PASS President
Tom Mayberry. "We
really tried to keep
an eye on the travel
as we made the
schedule. We are
very happy with a
streamlined 2023."
The season
kicks off March 17th
and 18th at the
famed Hickory Motor
Speedway with a pair
of 150 lap tilts.
The St. Patrick's Day
150 on Friday will
serve as the starter
for the National
Points Series,
followed by the
annual Easter Bunny
150 on Saturday.
More than 30 cars
are expected for the
mid-March Twin Bill
at the historic 3/8
mile oval in North
Carolina.
PASS then returns
north two weeks
later to begin the
regular season with
its only visit to
the 5/8 mile
Thompson Speedway as
a part of The
Icebreaker weekend
April 1, before
shooting up to New
Hampshire Motor
Speedway for the 3rd
annual Northeast
Classic on the 14th
and 15th.
April 23rd is the
opener for the tor's
hub track Oxford
Plains Speedway
(OPS) as PASS makes the
first of six visits
to the tricky oval
on Rte. 26 in
Oxford. From there
the tour will take a
week off before an
early season trip on
May 6th to Thunder
Road for one of a
half dozen partner
shows with the
American Canadian
Tour. The month of
May winds down with
a visit to the high
banked 1/4 mile
White Mountain
Motorsports Park
(WMMP) in scenic
North Woodstock, New
Hampshire.
The tour returns to
OPS on June 4th for
its second Maine
appearance before a
Mid-Season break to
prepare for a busy
July. Spud Speedway
in Caribou, ME will
be run on July 2nd before OPS on
July 9th and the 2nd
trip to WMMP on July
14th. Rounding out
the month of July,
PASS makes its
annual trip to the
cement palace,
Seekonk Speedway in
Seekonk,
Massachusetts on
Wednesday July 29th.
The annual 250
tune-up at OPS will
take place on August
6th before a three week
hiatus for teams and
officials to prepare
for the biggest
crown jewel of them
all, The 50th Annual
Oxford 250 on August
27th.
Lee USA
Speedway makes its
return to the PASS
tour after a year
off and will kick
off September on the
10th.
The
season will hit the
home stretch with a
third visit to WMMP
on Sept. 16th and
then a second visit to Thunder
Road as a part of
the Milk Bowl
Weekend on Saturday
the 30th.
The season
will conclude back
at Oxford Plains
Speedway with the
resurrection of the
PASS 400 Weekend
which will crown the
series champions on
October 14th and
15th.
Look
for veteran drivers
like defending
champion Ryan Kuhn,
Eddie MacDonald, and
DJ Shaw to be main
stays on the tour
along with
youngsters Gabe
Brown and Max
Cookson there to
challenge.
The National series races will
also be specified
shortly. |
