Veterans & Newcomers Find
Success In PASS South in 2010 |
|
CHARLOTTE, NC
(December 3) – There is an old adage that “newer is
better,” but in the case of the Pro All Stars Series
(PASS) South Super Late Model division, newcomers and
veterans are “twice as nice.”
Perhaps more than
any other touring division in the country, PASS South
saw a fairly even break down of drivers, younger and
older, competing at the top level. The average age of
the top ten drivers in the 2010 final point standings
was just over 26, with Jay Fogleman being the oldest at
age 43 and Ryan Blaney being the youngest at age 16.
Blaney led the youth brigade with a breakout season
in 2010. After competing in PASS South since 2008,
Blaney finally recorded his much awaited for first
victory in the season opening South Carolina Clash at
the Dillon (SC) Motor Speedway. Blaney would lead the
points for much of the year and snare two more victories
in the Firecracker 125 at the Greenville-Pickens (SC)
Speedway and the Daniel Boone Classic at the Newport
(TN) Speedway. Although he came up 20 points short of
winning the championship, Blaney served notice that he
will be among the preseason favorites for the 2011
crown.
Teenagers and former Legends car standouts
Steve Legendre, Devin Jones, and Kenzie Ruston each had
moments during the 2010 season where their talents
shined through in a PASS South Super Late Model.
Legendre, under Jay Fogleman’s Shark Racing Development
banner, started the season off with a third place finish
in the South Carolina Clash. The Vermont native would go
on to score four top ten finishes and finish ninth in
points. Devin Jones, in his second season racing with
PASS, finished eleventh in points on the strength of
finishing in the top five twice and in the top ten seven
times in just 12 starts. Kenzie Ruston made her debut
with PASS in 2010, finishing twelfth in points with a
season’s best finish of ninth in the Daniel Boone
Classic.
Twenty-somethings Trey Mitchell and
Jimmy Weller both impressed this season in their first
full season racing with PASS. The Texas native Mitchell
built on several impressive runs in 2009 to lead 89 laps
and finish fifth in the final standings this year, with
a best finish of fourth at the South Boston (VA)
Speedway. Weller gradually improved throughout the
season. He capped it all off with his first career PASS
South win at South Boston after a thrilling duel with
fellow Buckeye and teammate Ryan Blaney.
While
youth was definitely served in 2010, old age and wisdom
proved to be just a little better. The over 30 crowd
racked up six wins this season, three each for Preston
Peltier and Andy Loden. Peltier’s journey with PASS
South goes back to 2006 when the series got its start.
However, Peltier was not able to find victory lane until
last year. Since then, Peltier has become PASS South’s
winning-est driver taking 6 checkered flags and captured
both the PASS National and PASS South championships in
2010. Although over 30, Loden’s road to the top of Super
Late Model racing has been a bit different. He won three
straight Late Model Stock championships at the legendary
Hickory Motor Speedway from 2006-2008. This year, Loden
came to PASS as a Super Late Model rookie. But, in the
middle of the season, Loden rattled off an unprecedented
three straight wins at Concord, Ace, and Orange County
and along the way established himself as a championship
contender. At season’s end, Loden finished third in
points and became the 2010 PASS South
Rookie-Of-The-Year.
At just 28 years of age,
Justin Wakefield is a grizzled veteran of the PASS South
Super Late Model wars. However, after coming into the
2010 season as a championship favorite, things went
south quickly for the driver and teamed based out of
Georgia. Despite a thrilling win in the Capital City
Clash at the Wake County Speedway, all too often
mechanical failures would sideline the 98 team. But,
after battling back from another mechanical issue,
Wakefield stormed through the field to win the
prestigious Mason Dixon Meltdown and finish in the top
ten in points for the third straight season. A win in
Gresham Motorsports Park’s World Crown 300 let everyone
see the strength of PASS and also put all on notice that
Wakefield would be a contender once again in 2011.
PASS South’s oldest regular competitors Jay Fogleman
and John Batten once again finished in the top ten in
points as well as Tennessee veteran Heath Hindman.
Although they were not able to get to victory lane this
season all three will be back and loaded for bear to get
those elusive checkered flags.
In 2010, both the
youths and the veterans were well served. And, looking
forward to next year, all of those drivers plus a strong
crop of new talent, young and old alike, hope to make
their mark when the 2011 season starts anew in March at
Anderson.

PASS SLM SOUTH
2010
REWIND |
Preston Peltier and
Johnson Motorsports celebrate both the 2010 PASS South
and 2010 PASS National championship titles. |
Peltier
Comes From Behind to Claim
the PASS South
Championship |
Naples ME
(11/02) There are plenty of terms for a race car
driver’s driving style and 2010 Pro All Stars Series
(PASS) South Champion Preston Peltier fits the
definition of charger to a “T”. He’s a hard nosed racer
that expects to win every time he takes the green, and
sometimes his drive to win has left more than one angry
driver in his wake.
In 2010 Pettier raced as hard
as ever, but on those nights that he didn’t have the
fastest car he took what the race gave him. His team
didn’t have an unlimited budget, and they needed to
bring the 26 home in one piece at the end of the night,
win or lose.
That attitude and approach served
them well. Peltier scored three wins and accumulated
nine top tens in thirteen starts, a record that
translated to a hard earned PASS South championship for
Peltier and his Johnson Motorsports team.
Peltier trailed Ryan Blaney by four points when the
traveling super late model stars headed to the season
finale at Newport Speedway. The racing gods frowned on
Blaney and smiled on Peltier at the Mason-Dixon
Meltdown. Blaney suffered a flat tire under green and
could only muster a sixteenth place finish while Peltier
raced home in fourth to beat Blaney to the crown by
twenty points.
Despite having to settle for
second in the championship chase, Blaney had a stellar
season by anyone’s standards. He got his year off to a
strong start with his first PASS South win at the season
opener at Dillon Motor Speedway and followed up with
victories at Greenville-Pickens and Newport. The 2009
PASS South Rookie of the Year landed in the top five
seven times and nine times he was in the top ten.
Third place points man and 2010 PASS South Rookie of
the Year Andy Loden was the third member of the three
win club, earning his during a mid season tear that saw
the three time Hickory Motor Speedway track champion in
victory lane at Concord, Ace and Orange County, all in a
row. Loden came within a whisker of setting a
consecutive series win record, finishing second to
Blaney at Greenville-Pickens.
Jay Fogleman didn’t
score a win in 2010 but a consistent season gave him
fourth in the standings. Fogleman’s best result was a
second at Hickory in April and he earned nine top tens
in his thirteen starts. Texas Trey Mitchell missed one
start and still managed to finish fifth in the standings
Consistency was also the key for sixth place points man
Heath Hindman, with five top tens and a fifth at Wake
County topping his results.
How do you score two
wins, enter all the races and finish seventh in the
final PASS South standings? Ask Justin Wakefield. The
PASS regular had a roller coaster season to put it
mildly. His team visited victory lane at Wake County
Speedway and capped their season with a big win in the
Mason-Dixon Meltdown, but in between they suffered more
l problems than any one race team deserves. Eighteenth
at Dillon put the team in a hole from the get go, but a
23rd at Hickory in the Easter Bunny, 21st at Orange
County really put them deep in the standings. Better
results followed, and his team never gave up. In
reality, seventh in the points is a testament to this
team’s dedication and their win at the season finale
will help carry them to a better 2011 start.
John
Batten finished eighth in the points with a best result
of seventh at Dillon and Hickory, and Vermonter Steve
Legendre drove his Shark Racing Development Ford to one
top five and four top tens for ninth. Jimmy Weller
scored at South Boston Speedway and added two more top
fives and four top tens to his 2010 tally to complete
the top ten.
The PASS South top ten is an elite
group that successfully took on the best super late
model racers in the east. 104 drivers attempted to
qualify for one or more PASS South events in 2010 and
you can bet that that the 2011 schedule will draw even
more teams to the fold.
PASS South will kick off
their 2011 campaign at Anderson (SC) Motor Speedway on
Saturday March 12th, 2011. THE RACE at Historic North
Wilkesboro will pay the winner a minimum of $75,000.00
on April 9 2011. |

"Texas Trey"
Mitchell is the 2010
ARbodies.com Most Popular Driver |
PASS South Regular
Scores a Commanding Win in the Popular Speed51.com
Contest |
Wimberley, Texas
(January 13, 201) – According to the contest organizers,
over 40,000 race fans voted in the 2010 edition of the
Speed51.com ARBodies.com Late Model Most Popular Driver
contest and after the votes were tabulated, "Texas Trey"
Mitchell was declared the winner.
The obviously popular Mitchell will receive a
brand new ABC “Package A” kit from ARbodies.com for
winning the contest. ARBodies are among the most sought
after stock car racing bodies in the racing industry and
are worth nearly $3.000.00.
“It feels good to know that so many people from
all over the country voted for me,” Mitchell said. “We
came pretty close to winning last year, but I am proud
to say that a Texan won it with another Texan, JT
Schild, among the top three. I just want to thank
everyone for taking the time to vote for me and JT.”
For the past two seasons the personable
Wimberley, Texas, native has run up near the front in
the PASS South Super Late Model Series, finishing a
strong fifth in the 2010 final PASS point standings
despite running one less race than the rest of the
drivers who finished in the top ten.
Mitchell caught the racing bug at fourteen,
competing in four races in his Allison Legacy Mitchell
Motorsports ride at the very end of the 2004 season at
Thunderhill Raceway in Kyle, Texas, not far from his
hometown of Wimberley. In spite of his brief season, he
proved a quick learner and was named the “Most Improved
Driver” in the series that year.
With the racing bug fully implanted, in 2005
Trey started his first full racing season in style by
breaking the track record in the Allison Legacy season
opener at Red River Speedway in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Although 2005 saw no wins, he was in the lead pack all
season with seven second-place finishes – more than good
enough to win the coveted “Rookie of the Year” honors.
In what many saw as a daring move, the 16-year
old made a huge jump to the highly-competitive asphalt
Pro Modified division in 2006. The move took him from a
relatively calm 120 horsepower scale-model stock car to
a fire-breathing, low-slung , open- wheel modified, but
it didn't take the high school athlete-scholar very long
to learn the ropes. In fact - and to most everyone’s
astonishment - the youngster recorded a win in his
rookie season at one of the most demanding, half-mile,
high-banked tracks anywhere – San Antonio Speedway -
making him the youngest winner ever in the Texas-based
Pro Modified division. With that impressive notch in his
belt, Mitchell was named “Rookie of the Year” for the
second year in a row.
The following season, Mitchell raced his Pro
Modified at Houston Motorsports Park, picking up three
wins, six top 5's and 9-top 10's in 12 starts at the
3/8-mile concrete and asphalt oval, almost winning the
championship except for a costly wreck during the season
finale.
Mitchell, who combines his studies at the
University of North Carolina at Charlotte with his
racing career, says he will be putting his new ARBody to
good use in 2011.
“We are planning on running the whole PASS South
schedule this season – this time without missing a
race,” Mitchell said. “We have a great team and the best
part is that we have learned a whole lot about all the
tracks that were new to us over the past couple of
season. To me the PASS Super Late Model Series is the
best Super Late Model group in the country with a
first-class group of drivers and teams. Like a lot of
other drivers, I hope to move up the racing ladder -
paying my dues along the way - and eventually land a
ride in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, so the awesome
experience I am gaining now is invaluable.”

(10/16) The Pro All Stars Series (PASS) headed to
Newport Speedway (TN) on Saturday, October 16th, for the
“Mason-Dixon Meltdown” to close out the 2010 Super Late
Model South and National championship series with both
titles up for grabs. Heading into the night’s action,
Ryan Blaney led Preston Peltier by a mere four points,
while Peltier led Johnny Clark by 11 in the National
Championship standings. Andy Loden set fast time, but it
was Justin Wakefield taking the checkered flag first
while Peltier took advantage of Blaney’s misfortune to
win the South title as well as the National title.
“I don’t have any words for it,” said Peltier, the
only South regular in series history to win the National
title. “It is cool.”
31 drivers took to the track
for qualifying. While many drivers wanted to claim the
final fast time of the season, it was once again Loden
on top of the charts with yet another track record, a
12.362 second lap around the Newport Speedway. |

Hickory NC (
9/27) The PASS South Super Late Models headed to the
Hickory (NC) Motor Speedway for the “Over the Mountain
150” Saturday, September 25th, 2010. Heading into the
night’s action, Ryan Blaney held a six-point advantage
over Preston Peltier for the series championship. Both
racers showed why they are battling for the top honors
as Peltier went to victory lane with Blaney crossing the
line second, shrinking Blaney’s lead to just four points
heading into the final race of the season.
“It is
going to come down to the last lap at Newport,” said
Peltier in victory lane. “If he gets the championship,
he will deserve it. If I get it, I will deserve it. I
just hope it is exciting.”
For the sixth time
this season, Andy Loden was the driver at the top of the
charts during qualifying. As it was last race at North
Wilkesboro Speedway (NC), Loden’s #29 machine set a new
record during the session, this time a new track record
at Hickory Motor Speedway for the PASS South Super Late
Model series with a 14.713-second lap.
With 34
Super Late Model drivers on hand, the focus after
qualifying shifted to the last-chance race, which
featured all drivers outside of the top 20 working hard
for six positions to transfer into the big show. Winning
the last chance race was first-time PASS racer Matt
Leicht, who was followed across the line by Kenzie
Ruston, Joey Coulter, Blaney, Joe Winchell and Chris
